Quips and Quotes:
“I once heard of a tale where a man finds himself in a hole, but it is much to large and deep for him to get back out. A doctor walks by, considers the man's predicament, and throws in a prescription. A priest walks by, sees the man is unable to get out of the hole, and promises to pray on his behalf. While both men were well intentioned, the man is still stuck in the hole until his friend walks by. Though the friend doesn't have any formal education, training or the like, he says, "I know exactly what to do!" and jumps into the hole. Here is where the tale has two possible, but equally likely endings: the friend says either, "I've been stuck in this hole before, and I know how to get out," or "I don't know how to get out, but what kind of friend would I be if I wasn't here to help you?" -via E.R.
Jive Talking
(Formerly just Ebonics lesson but in honor of my Uncle I’m changing it, and it will help me include some other catch phrases that are cool too.)
“on the radar” means that you are thinking about it or you have been thinking about it, whatever it may be. Very similar to what some people say about something being on the back burner but it’s a little more aggressive than that.
Catch 22
Sacrifice is a virtue that society as it is now does not value. To get to the top, you can push others down or around, but to sacrifice, help others, or share in the pot. One man that we here about all the time in February is MLK Jr. On April 3, 1968 he gave the speech in which he knew would be one of his last:
“And then I got into Memphis. And some began to say the threats, or talk about the threats that were out. What would happen to me from some of our sick white brothers? Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land. And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”
The thing about MLK and men of his ilk is that they were willing to lay down their lives for something that they believed in. MLK once said that a man who stands for nothing will fall for anything. What are you willing to stand for in your tenure in life? Or will you fall for anything? Think it over…
Mama’s Korner
Stay tuned for funny next time…
You Speak
I have a very strong feeling that the opposite of love is not hate -- it's apathy. It's not giving a damn.
